Processing Blue Jeans

Blue Jean rugs are made from old blue jeans.  I find them everywhere.  They take up a lot of room, and the sooner I process them, the easier it is to contain them to one area.

First, I cut the tops off.  You can tear the pockets off, and use the tops, but I find that it is just too labor intensive for the little bit of fabric you gain.  So I cut straight across where the legs come together.  Then I cut the seams off, and make the legs into neat rectangles.

This is an Eastmand Chickadee Cutter.  It is a wonderful tool, and I use it to cut the jeans apart, and then into 1" wide strips.

It has paid for itself several times over.

I put the strips at right angles to each other, and put right sides together.

I use a zigzag stitch and make a diagonal seam across these two strips, then without cutting thread or lifting the presser foot, I put the end of the strip I just did, and the next piece up, and sew them together.  This is pretty much the same kind of strip quilting method used by quilters.

Here is what the seam looks like.

Here are the strips finished.....I ususally sew them together until I don't have any more room on my sewing table.

Now I cut them apart.

Then I cut the extra material off each place I sewed the diagonal seam.

Here is a ball of glue jean strips sewn together.  This one weighs about a lb.

Here is a stack of blue jeans cut into rectangles.
